{Hiking High}

Saturday, after looking at our summer list, we decided to head up to Big Bear and do a little hiking around.  So we packed a lunch, lots of water, cameras and headed on up.

We took the ski lift up to the top of the mountain.  The kids loved the ride and everyone took in the beautiful view.
Once at the top we decided on a trail and started our hike.  The girls were enamored with the tall trees with their twisting branches.

We identified wild flowers, edible plants (thanks mom for teaching me) and played with pine sap.
The giant pine cones were everywhere and I was trying to think of an excuse to gather a bag of the beautiful cones and take them home.  I'm kicking myself that I didn't take a bag (or two), because of course now I have an idea for them.
Bret, ever prepared, pulled out his binoculars and did a little bird watching and whatever else you do when looking through binoculars.
We knew it was time for lunch when Jonas declared "I HUNGRY!" and kept kicking Bret.  He's like his Mama, when he's hungry he gets grouchy.

Here you can see how he likes to eat his Oreos.  One in each hand, cream side only.  That's my boy.

A few pictures were taken (gosh I love my Instax camera!) to have proof that I was there as well.
 After lunch the girls pulled out their nature journals and drew some of their favorite plants and trees around.  Ella colored one whole page blue and explained it was because she just loved how blue the sky was.

Wild flowers were picked and pressed in their nature journals as well, though I'm not sure how well they will press since I have 2 very impatient girls who keep checking on them instead of letting them press.
It was such a beautiful day spent in the mountains.  The hiking of course was fun, but what I loved the most about it was teaching my kids and listening to their conversations between each other and us, their parents.  These kids of mine make me smile...yes they do.
A favorite photo from the day.  The map in Mai's back pocket, Ella's arm around her little sister...I love it!
